About Transport Tycoon

Transport Tycoon is a game by Chris Sawyer - who also made the bestseller Rollercoaster Tycoon and Locomotion, the sequel to Transport Tycoon.  However, Transport Tycoon was made long before those.  It began in the early 1990s, and was released as Transport Tycoon for DOS a few years later.  It was immensely popular and within a few years, Chris and his Graphics designer Simon Foster expanded on the idea by adding different climates -

Temperate

Arctic

Tropical

Toyland

While the toyland climate was a little silly, the others greatly expanded the realism of the game, and it sold even more, under the name 'Transport Tycoon Deluxe'.  Fish UK later did a Windows conversion, released in 1996, which was the biggest selling of all, mainly because the Windows conversion meant anyone could play it, not just DOS boffins who knew how to configure sound cards etc.

The aim of the game is to build transport services, namely trains, buses, aircraft and ships, to transport Passengers and cargo to and from different places.  There are a variety of industries, including Steel Mills, Power Stations and Oil Refineries.  You must build one or more of the types of transport from the provider to the processor (i.e. take the coal from the Coal Mine to the Power Station) and buy trains/trucks/ships/planes to carry the cargo.  There are loads of different trains and trucks, and the ships and planes can carry huge amounts of cargo.

A few years after it was released, Josef Drexler decided to try and make a patch to fix the few flaws in the game, and since then it has revolutionised the game, but you'll have to click on the 'About TTDPatch' button for more of that!
